Production. B-24 bombers and C-87 transports. Structural parts of a consolidated transport plane are installed in the "tunnel" of a tail fuselage section in a Western aircraft plant. This new transport, an adaptation of the B-24 bomber, is known as C-87, and carries one of the greatest human or cargo loads of any plane now in mass production. It is built in a plant equipped with the best and most modern air conditioning and fluorescent lighting systems

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – In the Vehicle Assembly Building high bay 4 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, an overhead view shows the Ares I-X upper stage simulator segments. The upper stage simulator will be used in the test flight identified as Ares I-X in 2009. Ares I is the essential core of a safe, reliable, cost-effective space transportation system that eventually will carry crewed missions back to the moon, on to Mars and out into the solar system. Ares I may also use its 25-ton payload capacity to deliver resources and supplies to the International Space Station, or to "park" payloads in orbit for retrieval by other spacecraft bound for the moon or other destinations. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Viewed from inside the altitude chamber in the Operations and Checkout Building's high bay, the Rotation Handling Fixture (RHF), with a simulated module attached, is lowered during a test. Under normal operation, the RHF will hold a pressurized module intended for the International Space Station, depositing it into the altitude chamber for leak testing. The chamber was recently reactivated after a 24-year hiatus. Originally, two chambers were built to test Apollo Program flight hardware. They were last used in 1975 during the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. In 1997, in order to increase the probability of successful missions aboard the ISS, NASA decided to perform leak tests on ISS pressurized modules at the launch site. After installation of new vacuum pumping equipment and controls, a new control room, and a new rotation and handling fixture, the chamber again became operational in February 1999. The chamber, which is 33 feet in diameter and 50 feet tall, is constructed of stainless steel. The rotation handling fixture is aluminum. The first module that will be tested for leaks is the U.S. Laboratory. No date has been determined for the test KSC-99pp0230

The manhole was removed to access the area where the tank's four liquid hydrogen engine cutoff sensors were replaced. The tank is being prepared to launch Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-121 in July. Photo credit: NASA/Jim Grossmann KSC-06pd0611

Ferry TICONDEROGA, Route 7, Shelburne, Chittenden County, VT

description

Summary

Significance: TICONDEROGA, considered to be the only extant unmodified vessel of its type in the United States, symbolizes an era of travel that has all but vanished from American waters. One of only two remaining "walking-beam" marine steam engines remaining in the U.S., TICONDEROGA plied the waters of Lake Champlain carrying day passengers, excursion groups and freight from 1906 through 1953. Now located several miles inland at the Shelburne Museum, this steel vessel was the last coal-powered ship in service on the lake and remains essential unchanged.
