crop is 3,884,000 acres, and the average yield 1.3 tons. The grains are usedextensively for hay only on the Pacific Coast. Onnon-irrigated lands in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California, where the rainfall is sufficient to per-t mit of farming, wheat is by far the most importantcrop. Over much of this area wild oats are verytroublesome, and the principal hay consists of patchesof wild oats cut in wheat-fields. Even where wild oatsare not troublesome, as where the rainfall is less thanabout eighteen inches annual^, much wheat is cut forhay. If cut at the proper stage, wheat, and the othercereals as well, make excellent hay for all kinds ofstock. In California beardless barley is used exten-sively for hay; this crop is also coming into use inOregon and Washington for the same purpose. Al-falfa and brome-grass (Bromzis znermzs) are also rap-idly coming into favor on the wheat-lands east of theCascade Mountains in the two States last named. The thick patch of grain hayshown in southern Louisiana consists entirely of cow-peas grown on sugar plantations, both for hay and fortheir fertilizing effect on the soil. At the North, Cana-dian field peas are sometimes sown with oats for hay,but the area is quite limited. They hardly extend asfar south as central Pennsylvania and central Ohio. The hay crop next in importance is alfalfa, ofwdiich 2,094,000 acres is reported in the Census ol1900. This is confined almost entirely to the West, and largely to irrigated land in that section. Alfalfa,as an important crop, stops at the western limit of other tame grasses, as shown in Fig. 17. It is nowrapidly gaining ground in the East and South. Theaverage yield per acre is 2.5 tons—nearly double thatof any of the preceding crops. Last in the list of tame hay crops are Millet and^Hungarian grasses. Of these, 1,744,000 acres areshown in the censu
