He also flew in Africa and the Middle East, taking photographs and making films of landscapes and people. He died in 1937 while on a flight over the Sudan.

The ETH-Bibliothek's collection contains about 18,000 photographs taken by Walter Mittelholzer (1894 – 1937) and Albert Heim (1849 – 1937) between 1924 and 1934.
