The majesty of the law has become in-volved in some curious complications by theclear acquittal of a man by a jury after he hadbeen sentenced to six months imprisonment,practically for the same imaginary offence, bythe judge. Lawyers John Lyle King andCharles E. Pope were authorized by a resolutionof the county board last September to assist thestates attorney in the case of the appeal of Sum-ner C. Welch to the Appellate court, for whichthey should receive $500. At a recent meetingof the board the resolution was rescinded on theground that Welch, after a trial in the Criminalcourt, had been found not guilty. But the worsepredicament of all is that the sentence of sixmonths has not been served. The Appellatecourt liberated Mr. Welch, on bail, until his trial.The trial is over ; Mr. AVelch is innocent ; butthe previous sentence stands ! JANUARY 1889.
