Adolphe Burdet was born in Croy, Switzerland, in 1860, He was a language teacher in the wealthy Van der Vliet family on the Elswout estate in Overveen and married the daughter Olga van der Vliet in 1894. Burdet's stereo photographs of birds were also used as illustrations in articles, books, and calendars, and became an honorary member of the Dutch Ornithological Society. Although Burdet has always lived in the Netherlands, he chose to keep his Swiss nationality.
