Dusky salamander (Desmognathus fuscus), Catoctin Mountain Park, 2015.
Summary
This species is also called the 'northern dusky salamander' to distinguish it from a separate species, the 'southern dusky salamander', found in the southern United States. Dusky salamanders in the north prefer rocky woodland streams, seepages and springs while those in the south prefer floodplains, sloughs (wetland backwater) and muddy areas along upland streams.
