Drawing, The Elevation of a Reliquary of a Skull, 1780-1810 (CH 18116905)

description

Summary

Work oriented in a vertical rectangle. Two angels stand upon a pedestal and support with their right hands the base of a reliquary casket. They address themselves to an imaginary public. A skull is shown in the casket; the name of the martyr is indistinctly printed in a heart form at the bottom of the casket. The casket is decorated with cherubim and festoons; a plant grows on top on a pedestal. A medallion decorates the main pedestal; apparently it represents a woman in a lion’s den.
