Presented frontally, one hand on his hip and the other holding a hoe, this peasant stands proudly before a verdant landscape. Delaunay often portrayed farmers, as in Young Man with a Fork.
His talent extended to whatever type of personality he wished to portray, but we note in particular his attention to faces and an attentiveness to colour which oscillates here between brown, green and blue, in a handsome tribute to basic chromatics.
This painting still belonged to the artist when he died and is listed among the items sold at auction after his death: Sale of 14-16 December 1891, lot 77, sold 1500 francs.
