is not liable tooccur, nevertheless, as an addi-tional precaution, safety hooks arearranged so as to act in case thewheels should leave the wires. Thewheels of the carriage serve, ofcourse, as collectors, and by the useof two wheels on each wire all spark-ing is eliminated. Connection be-tween the trolley carriage and thecar is established by means of aflexible cable. This cable is attachedto a vertical pole on top of the carand to a drum mounted in thevestibule, Fig. 8; by means of stiff springs which operate this drum, the cable is kept under a certain tension and at the same time a largeradius of action is provided. It is possible by this arrangement forthe cars to run out of their way 30 to 35 feet on either side, thususing the whole width of the street and passing vehicles withoutdifficulty. The cables are further provided with plugs by means ofwhich the trolley carriage and cable may be detached from their cars.It is possible, therefore, if two cars meet on the same circuit, for

It is sometimes noteven necessary for the cars to stop, the cables being exchangedwhile the cars are running by virtue of their own momentum. Motors. The motors of these cars are unique and very inter-esting, being entirely embedded in the wheels or, more properly, theythemselves make up the wheels, for the field magnets of each motorare the hubs of the wheel and the armature rotates around them, Fig. 9.The motors are of the direct-current series-wound type, of about 20
