Florida Marine Museum, a paradise for shell collectors, on the U.S. 41 Tamiami Trail, 1 mile north of Fort Myers, Fla.

Significance: The Esperanza is a reconstruction of a boat found in a rotted condition. The boat was used by Cuban refugees seeking a new life in the United States. The boat's construction is typical of small Cuban fishing vessels, employing reused materials such as wood from shipping palettes, scrap metal, and tree branches for spars. The boat was rebuilt using dimensions from the original artifact and some original material was reused, including the upper planks.
