Between each operation there is careful washing to remove all scale and adhesion and to leave surfaces clean for later processing. The big Midwest plant doing the work is well equipped to handle it in stride

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Stocks of partially completed lengths of seamless copper tube in many sizes. These have still to go through several more draws through dies on drawbenches. Each draw reduces them in diameter and wall thickness, and lengthens them out. Then, before the tubes leaves the mill, the ends will be sawed off straight and clean. Metal scrap salvage. The rural scrap collection center at Dexter, Michigan was the scene of much activity as the drive sponsored by the War Production Board (WPB) gained headway. The first load dumped here was followed by many others as farmyards yielded tons of old iron and rubber that put money into the pockets of local farmers and much valuable material back into use

Halftrac scout cars. When the American assembly line gets down to business, things gets done and done well. The assembling of engines for the Army's new halftrac scout cars is a job well done and understood by the trained men of a large Ohio truck plant. White Motor Company, Cleveland, Ohio

Tank manufacture (Chrysler). Ten thousand skilled workers at the huge Chrysler tank arsenal,in Detroit,turning out twenty-eight ton M-3 tanks. This pair is attaching a hinge plate to the cupola of a gun turret which will be set on one of these rolling arsenals

Army truck manufacture (Dodge). A bank of wheels and tires for Dodge Army trucks piled up as they arrive at the plant before the assembling process starts

Steel manufacture, Allegheny-Ludlum. This doesn't look very impressive, just a pile of rock. Well, that's what it is, a pile of limesone, but since limestone is the main ingredient for the refining of high quality steels, heaps of rock such as these mighty important factors in the maintenance of defense production
