Rubber reclamation. Rubber "mush" from old tires. Softened rubber material, reclaimed from scrap tires by dissolving and washing away the fiber, passes from dewatering screens to storage bins. The rubber, still hot from steam used in previous operations, is kept moving into a squeezing device before proceeding to the drying and other operations of the xylos process. Firestone

Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. The first step in the manufacture of high-altitude-flying shatterproof oxygen cylinders in the metal department of a large rubber factory is the forming or stamping of the shell. Stainless steel sheets are blanked or cut into discs(left foreground). Before stamping, these discs are drawn through rolls where a drawing compound is added to both sides to facilitate the forming of the shell. The 750-ton toggle press, shown above, forms a half cylinder in one powerful stroke. Once the half cylinder is formed, it is trimmed and the value-fitting hole is punched into the spherical dome. A cleaning operation later removes the drawing compound. The cylinder halves are now ready for the various welding operations. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Conversion. Toy factory. Stephanie Cewe and Ann Manemeit, have turned their skill from peacetime production of toy trains to the assembly of parachute flare casings for the armies of democracy. Along with other workers in this Eastern plant, they have turned their skill to the vital needs of the day, and in many cases have seen to it that the machinery they used to use does Uncle Sam's most important work today. Here, they are assembling parachute flare casings, using the same electric screwdrivers they formerly used to assemble the locomotives of toy trains. A. C. Gilbert Company, New Haven, Connecticut
