me that he found two or three largedoses of 25 grains each more effectual in bringing the urineback to its normal condition than repeated small doses; andI have since then frequently verified this experience in practice.If the urine becomes decidedly alkaline, the boric acid shouldbe combined with the benzoate of ammonia in 10-grain doses,or urotropine in doses of from 5 to 10 grains three times 92 TREATMENT OF ENLARGED PROSTATE daily may be given. This is particularly effective when theurine contains pus and mucus. When pus forms, the bladder must be washed out once ortwice daily with disinfectants or astringent lotions. A 4-ounceindiarubber bottle fitted with nozzle and stopcock (Fig. 36) isthe most convenient apparatus to employ for the purpose. Itshould be completely filled with the lotion so as to avoid theintroduction of air into the bladder. Not more than between2 or 3 ounces should be thrown into the bladder at one time,though it may be necessary to repeat this process several

If, however, thecystitis be severe, not more than half an ounce should beintroduced, as the bladder walls are under such circumstancesextremely intolerant of tension. All lotions should be usedwarmed to 100° F. For cleansing the bladder the mostsimple and useful injections are a 1 per cent, solution of boricacid or a teaspoonful of boro-glyceride to 4 ounces of water.Permanganate of potash solution, commencing with 1 in 5,000and gradually increasing it to 1 in 1,000, and perchloride ofmercury, 1 in 10,000, make excellent injections. But oursheet-anchor in such cases is nitrate of silver. Commencewith a very weak solution, 1 in 4,000, gradually increasingthe strength to 1 in 750.
