Knee-chest position. (Potter.) METHODS OF GYNAECOLOGICAL EXAMINATION. 45 EXAMINATION IN THE ERECT POSTURE. This is occasionally necessary; fortunately, not often, as it is naturallyan unpleasant position For the woman. It is of value in determining thedegree of prolapse in its slighter forms. These slight variations fromthe normal are not appreciable when the patient is examined in the dorsalposition, even if she is told to hear down ; hut if she stands, the degreeto which the cervix approaches the vulva can he easily measured with thefinger. The patient should he directed to stand erect, either with the feetslightly apart or with one foot placed upon a low stool or the round of achair. A sheet is placed around her, reaching to the floor. The physician,kneeling on one knee, passes one hand beneath the clothing and inserts theforefinger into the vagina. If the patient is then requested to strain down,the degree of prolapse, if any he present, can he readily noted. THE KNEE-CHEST POSITI
