Byggnadsarbetena av den nya kyrkan i Skärkind påbörjades 1835. Socknen anlitade den välkända byggmästaren Abraham Nyström från Hållingstorp i Kristberg. Resultatet blev ett rymligt tempel med korsarmar i öster och väster (långhuset är orienterat i norr-söder). Av den gamla kyrkan, som revs först 1844, sparades koret för att att användas som gravkapell.
