Photograph of a Chemehuevi Indian mother holding her baby on her lap, ca.1900. The baby is strapped on a papoose basket. The woman sits on the ground in front of a large woven container, a mesquite granary, with various cooking implements on top. She wears a long dotted dress and a kerchief around her head. Another child wearing a dress and holding a piece of paper[?] is sitting on the ground at right. An oblong stone sits on the ground on the other side of the woman. Shadows from off-camera people and objects are cast from left.
