Charlestown Navy Yard, Marine Railway, Between Piers 2 & 3, on Charlestown Waterfront at west end of Navy Yard, Boston, Suffolk County, MA

description

Summary

Significance: The Marine Railway is a significant ship repair structure at the Charlestown Navy Yard, used for nearly a half-century in the repair and maintenance of small naval vessels, ranging from tugboats to submarines. It was one of several marine railways constructed at various U.S. navy yards by Crandall Construction Company during the World War I buildup. Despite recent demolition of portions of the cradle, the Marine Railway is a significant surviving example of an early twentieth-century timber railway dry dock.
