Century plant [Agave americana]

description

Summary

Common name: Century plant

Scientific name: Agave americana

Origin: Southwestern USA

Uses: Great for a specimen plant. These architectural plants will flower once after 8 -10 years with a dramatic flower stalk. The plant will die after putting all of its energy into the flower. New plantlets will form at the base of the parent. Native Americans used the fiber in the leaves, complete with a needle on the tips.

First shows up in an 1890’s photo of Officer’s Row in planters. Early Army photos also show this plant on the south end of the Island along the walk known as ‘Lover’s Lane’.
