Captain Louis McLane Hamilton (1844-1868), Washita Battlefield National Historic Site, 2016.
Summary
Grandson of Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the United States and member of President George Washington's cabinet, young Hamilton was named for his grandfather. At the age of 18 he became a commissioned officer in the US Infantry. By 1866 he became the youngest captain in the Regular Army when he joined the 7th US Cavalry. His ambition, however, would lead to his death at the Battle of the Washita on November 27, 1868. He was commanding a squadron on the initial charge into Chief Black Kettle's village and was killed instantly by a bullet through the heart. Dr. Henry Lippincott noted that the "ball entered about five inches below the left nipple, and emerged near inferior angle of right scapula. Death was instantaneous."
