CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Ares I-X roll control system module, comprising two modules and four thrusters, is being prepared for a fit check on the Ares I-X rocket upper stage simulator. The hardware is in high bay 4 of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The system is designed to perform a 90-degree roll after the rocket clears the launch tower, preventing a roll during flight and maintaining the orientation of the rocket until separation of the upper and first stages. The system module will return to earth and splash down; it will not be recovered. Ares I-X is the test vehicle for the Ares I, which is part of the Constellation Program to return men to the moon and beyond. Ares I-X is targeted for launch in summer of 2009. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, technicians inside the payload canister monitor movement of the Columbus Laboratory module as it is lowered into the canister. The canister will transport the module and other payloads to Launch Pad 39A in preparation for its journey to the International Space Station. The European Space Agency 's largest single contribution to the International Space Station, Columbus will expand the research facilities of the station, providing crew members and scientists around the world the ability to conduct a variety of life, physical and materials science experiments. The module is approximately 23 feet long and 15 feet wide, allowing it to hold 10 large racks of experiments. The module is scheduled to be transferred to Launch Pad 39A in early November, in preparation for its journey to the station. Columbus will fly aboard space shuttle Atlantis on the STS-122 mission, targeted for launch Dec. 6. Photo credit: NASA/George Shelton KSC-07pd3033

description

Summary

Significance: The LCC was listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on January 21, 2000. Originally nominated in the context of the Apollo Program, ca. 1961 through 1975, the LCC has since gained importance in the context of the Space Shuttle program, ca. 1969 to 2010. It is considered significant at the national level under NRHP Criterion A in the areas of Space Exploration and Communications, and under NRHP Criterion C in the area of Architecture. The Launch Control Center performs the vital operations integral to the prelaunch preparation and launch of NASA's manned space vehicles. Under Criterion C, the LCC, like typical examples of the International Style, is characterized by a lack of exterior ornament, a flat roof, ribbon windows on the north elevation, a skeletal structure of reinforced concrete, cantilevered upper floors, and an emphasis on horizontality.
