Billingsgate Triumphant, or - Poll Dab a Match for the Frenchman (BM 1880,1113.3393)

description

Summary

Satire on street life and French pretensions. A scene in Billingsgate outside the Fighting Cocks tavern with a fishwife raising her fists to fight a Frenchman. He has given his coat to a fearful friend revealing that his under-clothing consists only of what can be seen - cuffs, collar and breeches that lack any back; he defecates in fear and a dog licks his stools as they fall to the ground. On the left, another fishwife sits by her basket smiling and pointing at the Frenchman; two customers watch from a window and the publican stands at the door holding a gin measure and glass; above the door a notice reads, 'Old Noted Gin and Purl House. By Chris. Catch-Penny'.
