n,the Bell System operating companieshave reached the conclusion thatadequate provision be made now sothat all offices may be readily op-erated when necessary from emer-gency sources of power. Of the 5,200 offices having storagebatteries, there are about 4,000 which are of such a size that the batteriescan economically be made largeenough (generally from one to threedays capacity) so that the office loadmay be carried on the battery until asmall portable engine driven chargingset, such as shown in Figure 1, can bebrought in and placed in operation topick up the load. Such a set is small,the one pictured weighing only 71pounds, so that in general one mancan quickly load it into a truck, trans-port it to the office, and connect itto the battery. Some 200 sets ofthis general type, ranging in size from650 to 3,000 watts, are distributedthroughout the System, and while thisnumber has so far proven adequate,more than 300 additional sets are be-ing purchased.
