This activity covers the fields of physics, mathematics, engineering, physi-cal chemistry and aerodynamics in suchfields as physical electronics, solid statephysics, theoretical mechanics, plasmaphysics, radiation effects, high tempera-ture physics, and the many disciplinesnecessary to understand nuclear burstphenomena. This program provides forthe earliest application of scientific ad-vances to weapon programs. It is the keyin the all-important job of keeping abreastof the constantly advancing state-of-the-art, and in anticipating changes inweapon requirements and capabilities. After a given weapon reaches stock-pile, Sandias surveillance organizationperiodically inspects representative sam-ples and conducts tests to assure continu-ing operability throughout the life of theweapon. Quality engineering groups testselected samples of weapons and compo-nents at manufacturing and assembly lo-cations. They write quahty control and

Still another Sandia responsibility isthat of training military instructors inthe maintenance and operation of nuclearweapons.
