This view is inside the telephone exhibit building at Chicago s Lake Front Fair lastSummer. At the left is a display of automatic message accounting equipment, and anew tvpe of telephone is on a counter at the right The factors of interest that causedthe Fairs director to want this tele-phone exhibit have been amply borneout. It was the hit of the Fair, at-tracting over a million persons—77percent of all visitors. Part of thereason for this large attendance wasa location near the main gate. Butthe chief cause is the exhibits tre-mendous popular appeal that bringspeople back again and makes themurge their friends to see the show. One suburbanite wrote: Your entire exhibit was builtaround the idea of permitting thepublic to Touch and Listen. Aswe stood back and watched the re-actions of the people as they enteredthe building, we couldnt help but feelthat through your efforts, a closerbond was immediately established be-tween strangers, as they laughinglylistened on the earphones . . .
