ATLANTIC OCEAN (Feb. 02, 2012) Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class Scott Miller, left, and Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Cliff Edwards, right, search for foreign object damage (FOD) on a M61A2 weapon system as Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Kyle Shankle rotates the barrel in the hangar bay aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65). Enterprise is underway participating in exercise Bold Alligator 2012. Bold Alligator is the largest naval amphibious exercise in the past 10 years and represents the Navy and Marine Corps' revitalization of the full range of amphibious operations. The exercise focuses on today's fight with today's forces, while showcasing the advantages of seabasing. Aircraft carriers are warships that act as airbases for carrier-based aircraft. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
