Summary
Aviation in Britain Before the First World War
Cody glider kite about to be launched. The relative lightness in weight of the glider is demonstrated by the fact that just five men are able to hold it up. This glider was an important step forward in Cody's eventual progression to building his first aeroplane. He and his sons Vivian and Leon flew the glider Successfully many times however in September of 1905 Vivian was involved in a serious accident with the glider plunging sideways to the ground from around fifty feet. Vivian was in hospital for nearly three months and another six months recuperating at home. After this Cody concentrated on powered flight with the design of his aircraft more resembling his kites than his glider.
