Summary

A U.S. Marine Corps Hawker Siddeley AV-8A Harrier aircraft from Marine Attack Squadron VMA-513 lifts off the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa (LHA-1) during exercise "Valiant Blitz 81-1" in the Philippine Sea. This was the first time the Harrier operated from a flight deck normally restricted to helicopters. Note the Sikorsky CH-53A/D Sea Stallion in the background.
