But before this could be rejected or put into operation a modus vivendihad been discovered. Teachers were so hired by the trustees that if for anyreason salaries cannot be paid within thirty days after they become due the eon-tracts shall become null and void unless both parties agree upon terms of con-tinuing. All back pay is to be provided for however as soon as possible fromCollege income. It is said this practical suggestion came from Professor OtlioWinger. By this plan the trustees are not obligated to go into debt contrary totheir former instructions from the church and yet allowed them to hire teaeh-lers and make provisions for conducting the school. The literary work was of a high standar-d of excellence. Juljlifprograms were given every Saturday evening. The general public was invitedto these programs and the citizens from the north end of town embraced theopportunity and attended in large numbeis. Both halls were often quite AvelliSlled.
