On the viaduct proper use is made of aspecially designed concrete light standardand trolley pole combination each bearingtwo bronze lanterns. These standards formpart of the general design and are installedupon piers in the handrail they are ade-quately reinforced to withstand a horizon-tal pull of -4.800 pounds applied at a point26 feet above the sidewalk level. The handrail upon which these stand-ards rest is of sturdy construction 13jinches thick at the base and 3 feet, 6^ 2inches in height reinforced and constructedin a way to reduce to a minimum the ten-dency to crack which most handrails onbridge structures have a tendency to do. The method of reinforcing and con-structing these rails was developed by theengineering division of the
