f the women, only 4.5 per cent and 16.P per cent of the men havebeen inoculated against typhoid. Otitis media, or inflammation of the middle ear, remains high yearafter year consistently greater in men than in women. This is probablyexplained by the high incidence of tonsillitis in men and the larger numberof them engaged in swimming. This difference, however, is in a measure,offset by the fact that more women than men have had measles, mumps andinfluenza, which are frequently associated ^ith this ear condition. The large number of students who have had communicable diseasesbefore entering the University means many of them have been exposed tocomplications and have risked the damage of the heart and kidney whichis instrumental in increasing the human death rate for renal and cardiacdiseases. The young man who undergoes the physical strain and intoxic-ation incidental to having a major communicable disease although herecovers, is fortunate if he does not reduce his life expectancy. o o
