the table. The meal is made the central idea, andmuch time is spent on the planning, preparation, and serving ofmeals. The ultimate aim is to improve the selection, care, andpreparation of food in the home. The course in sewing is designed to give a general knowledgeof garment-making. Practice is given in both hand and machinesewing. In the making of the various garments, attention ispaid to the study of patterns, their interpretation and use; andof seams and finishes. In the spring term some time is given tothe study of fabrics. Each girl is required to know how to makeevery kind of garment she wears and to make her graduationdress. PEDAGOGY Pedagogy is an essential department of a Teachers Train-ing School. The instruction in this department deals with thefundamental principles of education; the relation of the differ-ent branches of knowledge to one another and to the mind, andthe method by which the human powers may be trained. Itdeals with the theory and the practice of teaching.

East Carolina Teachers Training School 29 The Department of Pedagogy in this school devotes sometime to a study of the fundamental laws of mind, that the stu-dents may utilize their knowledge of these mental activities intheir own study. This includes within its scope a study ofChild Development and How to Teach Children to Study. The Teaching process is emphasized with the aim of enablingthe students to understand and make a practical application ofthe principles involved in good teaching and the methods em-ployed to realize the goal in the process of education. PRIMARY EDUCATION This course covers the work of the first three grades and con-sists of a careful study of all primary subjects, aided by obser-vation of work done in these grades. The special method con-sists in selection, adaptation, and development of subject-matterwith regard to the fundamental principles underlying the learn-ing process. Throughout the course, the inter-relation of sub-jects is given special emphasis. P
