Anna Roosevelt - National Parks Gallery
Summary
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (1906-1975) was the eldest child and only daughter of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. As the oldest child, she was most aware of the conflict between her mother and grandmother, FDR's battle with polio, as well as the difficulties her parents experienced in the aftermath of her father's affair with Lucy Mercer. She served for a time as her father's confidential assistant. She accompanied FDR to Yalta and served as White House hostess during her mother’s absences. Anna also facilitated her father’s meetings with Lucy Mercer, straining her relationship with her mother.
After the war, Anna and her second husband attempted to run a newspaper in Arizona without success. In all, Anna married three times and had three children. After Eleanor’s death in 1962, Anna was active with organizations and causes that her mother had supported, including Americans for Democratic Action, the United Nations Association of the United States, and the Wiltwyck School. She died in New York in 1975.
