Depth 10,000 feet, 400 miles southwest of the Azores; view of the bow section of the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS SCORPION (SSN-589) where it rests on the ocean floor. Note the forward messenger buoy cavity and escape trunk access hatches. The SCORPION sank with the loss of its 99 man crew on 22 May 1968 by what is believed to have been the accidental explosion of one of its own torpedoes.
