Aircraft carriers are warships that act as airbases for carrier-based aircraft. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.

A view from the forecastle of the Mark 7, 16-inch, 50-caliber guns and superstructure of the battleship USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62). In the background is the aircraft carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CV-64)

As a Fighter Squadron 41 (VF-41) F-14A Tomcat aircraft is launched from the No. 3 catapult aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72), the line attaching an aerial banner target to the aircraft is played out across the flight deck. The LINCOLN is at sea for its shakedown cruise

Flight deck crewmen conduct flight operations with an F-14 Tomcat aircraft aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS NIMITZ (CVN 68). The F-14 is in position to be catapulted from the carrier

Right front view of an A-6 Intruder aircraft from Medium Attack Squadron 165 (VA-165) coming in for an arrested landing aboard the aircraft carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CV-64). Two F-14 Tomcat aircraft are parked on the left

An E-2C Hawkeye aircraft passes overhead as a Fighter Squadron 84 (VF-84) F-14A Tomcat aircraft stands by for launch on the flight deck of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) during the ship's shakedown cruise

A UH-46D Sea Knight helicopter from the ammunition ship USS KISKA (AE 35) hovers above the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) during Fleet Exercise 85. In the foreground are several F-14A Tomcat aircraft from Fighter Squadron 21. On the far right is an F/A-18A Hornet aircraft

A Fighter Squadron 143 (VF-143) F-14A Tomcat aircraft, with its arresting hook down, approaches for a landing aboard the aircraft carrier USS SARATOGA (CV 60)

A US Navy (USN) F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft approches for a landing onboard the USN Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), in the Persian Gulf. The REAGAN along with its embarked Carrier Air Wing 14 (CVW-14) is currently on her maiden deployment conducting Maritime Security Operations in the region and participating in the global war on terrorism

A US Navy (USN) C-2A Greyhound, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 30 (VRC-30) Providers, begins its catapult from the deck of the Kitty Hawk Class Aircraft Carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) for the last time as the carrier is going in for three year Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) phase. That's why the Greyhound has no carrier markings

A Fighter Squadron 114 (VF-114) F-14A Tomcat aircraft leaves the flight deck after being launched from the No. 3 catapult aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72)
