An AH-1Z Viper assigned to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron (VMX) 1 conducts close air support during exercise Winter Fury 21 at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Jan. 28, 2021. Winter Fury highlights 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing’s (MAW) ability to fight a near-peer adversary by employing all of the aircraft in its inventory, including F-35B Lightning II, AH-1Z Viper, UH-1Y Venom, F/A-18 Hornet, CH-53E Super Stallion, MV-22B Osprey, and KC-130J Super Hercules. During Winter Fury, 3rd MAW will conduct long-strikes, deploy and support infantry Marines, assist in the transport of artillery assets, and provide logistical support to Marines on the ground.
