FIG. in Fig. 3. The moveable platinum con-tact is carried on a small vertical springbehind the vibrator spring. When thecontact is made the movement of thevibrator is not arrested, as in other formsbut continues to its fall amplitude, thusallowing a long make. The lengthof the make can be varied by screw-ing in or out the other platinum contact. The most important advantage of this of the current joined the two pieces ofplatinum so tightly that the magneticpull was not sufficient to separate them.In the new form, as the break is madewhen the vibrator is at the middle of itsswing, the sudden blow with the entiremomentum of the vibrator head is al -wa3rs sufficient to break the platinumsapart, and once started, the vibratorcontinues in motion until the current is THE AMIiRICA.X A-A. FIG. of vibrator on the 110 volt, as well asbatter) circuits; it also adds very great-ly to the efficiency of the induction coilwith which it is used. A rod screwed into the iron head car-ries a weight which may be moved upand down and clamped in any positionwith a set screw. By this means therate of vibration may be varied withinwide limits. To summarize, the newvibrator has the following advantagesover older forms: First. Its action is independent ofthe current going through the coil. Second. Its rate of vibration is ad-justable. Third. It permits of a long make, and the length of the make andbreak are adjustable. Fourth. The break is very sud-den, increasing the efficiency of the coilsand making it thoroughly adapted to the110 volt circuit. Fifth. It never sticks. The outfits, complete for x-ray work, consist of a coil mounted on abase, withrheostat if used for 110 volt circuit, and base, as illustrated in Fig. 4. In addi-tion to this, a number of tubes, suitablestand, fluoroscopes,

The Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) booster is lowered toward a workstand in Kennedy Space Center's Vertical Processing Facility. The IUS will be mated with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and then undergo testing to validate the IUS/Chandra connections and check the orbiter avionics interfaces. Following that, an end-to-end test (ETE) will be conducted to verify the communications path to Chandra, commanding it as if it were in space. With the world's most powerful X-ray telescope, Chandra will allow scientists from around the world to see previously invisible black holes and high-temperature gas clouds, giving the observatory the potential to rewrite the books on the structure and evolution of our universe. Chandra is scheduled for launch July 22 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, on mission STS-93 KSC-99pp0619

Inside the Vertical Processing Facility, the Chandra X-ray Observatory is lifted by an overhead crane in order to transfer it into the payload canister transporter and out to Launch Pad 39B. Chandra is scheduled to launch no earlier than July 20 at 12:36 a.m. EDT aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, on mission STS-93.
