Radiographer to Cincinnati Hospital. About a year and a half ago (March, 1908), I undertooksome X-ray examinations of the mastoid region. I had repeat-edly obtained outlines of the mastoid cells upon lateral viewsof the skull taken for other purposes and occasionally obtaineda hazy shadow of the mastoid process on postero-anteriorfrontal sinus skiagrams, but I doubted that any practical infor-mation concerning the mastoid region could be gathered inthis manner. By way of experiment, the various positions were tried uponcadavers and normal individuals. The postero-ar.terior pbsition was discarded because the distance of the mastoid processfrom the plate rendered its details indistinct, and because in tlii-position the X-light traversed the bone in its greatest diam-eter, and the cells were all superimposed. The oblique lateral view avoided the oppo-site side and showed the mastoid fairly well, but the obliquepostero-lateral view seemed to give the clearest and mostextensive profile view of the mastoid. The pyramid is thusthrown forward and the mastoid details, especially the groovefor the lateral sinus, is shown (better than in any otherposition. The double inclination of the axis of the rays (in the obliquepostero-lateral position) coming as they do from above andbehind has raised the question of excessive distortion of therelations of the mastoid region. It was especially feared thatthe distance of the sigmoid groove from the external auditorymeatus would be inexact.
