Summary
Titelprent voor de serie van vier prenten over de brand in de Amsterdamse Schouwburg aan de Keizersgracht op 11 mei 1772. Vader Tijd trekt het gordijn van het ruïneuze toneel opzij om de brandende schouwburg te onthullen. Te midden van de ruïnes zit de bedroefde personificatie van de Amsterdamse Schouwburg met het wapen van de stad en een verbrande bijenkorf, waaruit de bijen zijn ontsnapt, in haar handen. Onder het toneel een cartouche met de titel en het bekende vers van Vondel ('De waereld is een speeltooneel: elk speelt zyn rol en krygt zyn deel'). Links en rechts daarvan een zesregelig vers in het Nederlands (links) en Frans (rechts).
A cartouche or cartouch is an oval design with a slightly convex surface, typically edged with ornamental scrollwork. It is used to hold a painted or low relief design. In Early Modern design, since the early 16th century, the cartouche is a scrolling frame device, derived originally from Italian cartoccia. Such cartouches are characteristically stretched, pierced and scrolling (illustration, left). Another cartouche figures prominently in the title page of Giorgio Vasari's Lives, framing a minor vignette with a device of pierced and scrolling papery cartoccia.
