Aft view of USS Albemarle (AV-5) underway, circa in 1957 (NH 57782)
Summary
The U.S. Navy seaplane tender USS Albemarle (AV-5) after being rebuilt to support the Martin P6M Seamaster jet flying boat. Albemarle was recommissioned at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Pennsylvania (USA), on 21 October 1957. After fitting out, she sailed for Norfolk, Virginia, on 7 December. Note the ramp and hoisting gear on the stern, which enabled the ship to bring the huge P6M on board without using a crane. The P6M program was cancelled in August 1959 and Albemarle never serviced this aircraft.
