Summary

PACIFIC OCEAN (Aug. 13, 2007) A RIM-7P NATO Sea Sparrow Missile launches the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) during a stream raid shoot exercise. Lincoln's self-defense systems fired four Sea Sparrow missiles, engaging and destroying two BQM-74E turbojet-powered drone aircraft and a High-Speed Maneuvering Surface Threat (HSMST) remote controlled Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) during the event. Lincoln and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 are underway off the coast of Southern California conducting Tailored Ship's Training Availability (TSTA). Aircraft carriers are warships that act as airbases for carrier-based aircraft. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
