It may be that muscular spasm prevents anymotion at all, but that condition should not be confusedwith the voluntary muscular fixation. Moreover, if the treatment has been carried on with suffi-cient gentleness during the preceding days the patient is, asa rule, sufficiently trained to understand the directions ofthe operator. For the first two or three days we advisepassive exercises with the shoulder completely dropped andthe muscles relaxed, the fingers which rest on the tuberosityalways controlling so that the upper fragment moves well FRACTURES 173 with the shaft.
