t seenon examination disappears, leaving a raw-looking andtender spot the size of the original macule. In othercases a sharply-cut ulcer results, with floor more or lessspeedily extending to the depth of the mucosa, assuminga linear shape with its long axis at right angles to thelines of traction (along the width of the tongue, parallelwith the groove of the gingivo-labial junction, etc.). The papular syphiloderm is represented on mucoussurfaces by the mucous patch (plaque maqueiise, mucoustubercle, moist papule, etc.). These lesions are single ormore commonly multiple, usually very well definedpatches, which, being at first, and usually but for abrief time, reddened macules, speedily acquire an opalinehue over their flat surface, suggesting the action ofnitrate of silver upon mucous membrane. They vary insize from a split pea to that of a bean, but they are oftenof greater size, involving a space as large as a penny oras extensive as the inner face of the lip or the arch of Plate 16.

They are roundish, oval, or very irregularin contour, and they are often perceptibly raised abovethe general level. They are usually painful, and theyare often seen en face on membranes in contact, suchas the inner face of the cheek and the gum, and the twohalves of the angular crevice behind the last molarteeth. A variation of this lesion is seen when a diph-theroid and bulkier film extends over the face of thepatch or patches. The most common complication of this lesion is thesuperficial erosion which succeeds it, and which becomesvisible as a vivid or dull-reddish, moist and shining ordry and glazed sequel of the removal, by friction orother agency, of the pellicle of epithelium covering thetypically developed mucous patch. The elevation ofthese plaques by infiltration is not uncommon, and afurther but rarer complication is furnished when thishypertrophic effect
