Eecklinghausen found that milk put uponthe peritoneal surface of the central tendon showed little eddies causedby the milk-globules passing through the stomata and entering thelymphatics. The central tendon consists of two layers of fibrous tissuearranged in different directions. When the diaphragm moves duringrespiration, these layers are alternately pressed together and pulledapart.
