The Philippines 311 but it is a work wherein American nurses musteventually figure, in the way of supervision at least,and where graduate Filipino nurses will soon be ofinestimable value. With an infant mortality offorty-four per cent, (of total number of deaths), thereis an immense field right here for visiting nurses*settlements. Investigation has shown the impaired health andweakened condition of the Filipino people (who arenot a strong or enduring race) to be largely dueto the prevalence not only of tuberculosis, but ofthe hook-worm disease, which seems to have noequal in its capacity to enervate and undermine thesystem. Nurses have thus far not entered this work,but it is believed that the graduate male nurses willsoon play an important role in this and similar fields,as their training has been planned particularly to fitthem for the general health work of the islands.The third campaign was begun by the organisationof a society for the prevention of tuberculosis, andreceived its
