93, and once in 1830. In France, onlyone example appears as yet to have been noticed: it wasobtained near Strasbourg. In Holland likewise only one; inBelgium one; and in Germany one. In Asia, several wereobserved about Persia, and in the neighbourhood of theCaucasian range. In this country the first recorded specimen was taken nearLondon, during the hard frosts of the year 1766, and wasobtained by Marmaduke Tunstall, Esq. The next was cap-tured about the same time near Wycliffe, the cunabulagentis of the Great Reformer, whose family derived its namefrom that place, in Yorkshire. Another was shot near thetown of Berwick-on-Tweed. In Norfolk, one at Halvergate,in the year 1805. In the county of Cambridge, othersdu ing the hard winter of 1813. In Devonshire, one waskilled at Kenton Warren, in 1828; and another by theRiver Teign, February the 1st., 1837. In winter this Goose moves to warmer regions. These birds appear to be considered very good eating.They soon become tame in confinement.

RED-BREASTED GOOSE. 130 They feed on green vegetables in preference to grain, but,on the principle of Hobsons choice, put up with the latterif no better be forthcoming. They utter their call-note to keep each other together, orif alarmed by a bird of prey: Meyer expresses it by theword tsjackwoy. Male; weight, about three pounds; length, one foot eight,nine, or ten inches; bill, very short and nearly black, witha tinge, of red; tooth, black. Iris, hazel; between the eyeand the base of the bill is a large whitish patch; the eyeis encircled with a line of dark brownish black. Forehead,and head on the crown, dark brownish black; on the sides isa patch of chesnut, speckled with black, and surrounded witha narrow line of white, which runs down the neck, borderingthe black of the throat, and the back of the neck; neck onthe back and nape, dark brownish black.
