With regard to the Caufes of thefe Diforders, there are two Opinions : Caufe.Dionis and others will have them proceed from a Rupture of the Peritoneum by fome violence, whereas Garengeot will have them to proceed not onlyfrom a Rupture of that Membrane, but more frequently from a Dilatation ofthe Peritonaeum, when it is not equally preffed by the abdominal Mufcles,.through a Wound, Relaxation, or other Defect, efpecially in the tranfverfeMufcles; fo that by the ftronger Action of the other Mufcles the Inteftines areforced, and the Peritonaeum dilated in that Part where there is the leaft iRefiftance.
