Summary
WASHINGTON (Oct. 12, 2018) A file photo taken in 1945 of Wilbur F. Hoffman provided by his family. On Sept. 29, 2018, Hoffman, now 100 years old, was presented the Bronze Star Medal in his hometown of Livingston, New Jersey, for his heroic actions aboard USS Hughes (DD 410) after it was hit by a bomb during World War II. Hoffman, then a chief water tender, kept steam on the emergency feed pump, ensuring water pressure to the fire main that allowed the repair party to keep a fire under control and eventually extinguish it.
