59TITIAN: 1489(?).1576 Venetian SchoolPORTRAIT OF GIACOMO DORIA HE has a long black, beard ; he is standing almost in full-face, andis dressed in black. His left thumb is thrust into his girdle,and he holds his robe with his right. Three-quarter length. Thebase of a column in the ritj;ht background. A hitherto unknown portrait from the brush of the great Venetian, andone moreover which for essential dignity bears comparison with more famouscreations of its author. ... It is a manly rendering of a manly figure,straightforward, impressive and dignified, a typical Titian.
