70 Patrick Street, Cork - Victorian era public domain image

description

Summary

These are the premises of the legendary Guy's of Cork - photographers, stationers, and publishers of Guy's Cork Almanacs and Directories. At no. 69 to the left is Allen, a drapers perhaps as a sign in the window proclaims that they have a Ready Made Department. At no. 71 is Russell - presumably Robert Russell ( http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/No_2_Urban__North_Centre/Patrick_Street/1110025/ ) , aged 71 on the 1901 census: Grocer and Provision Merchant (thanks Niall McAuley ( gnmcauley/ ) )...Also interesting for dating purposes perhaps is a poster on the archway leading to the church that advertises: Meeting: New Church. Is the church in the photo the "new church"? Is the meeting to be held there or is it about a new church elsewhere? (Obviously too much to hope that there'd be a clear date on the poster!)..Date: 1863-1870..NLI Ref.: STP_1817 ( STP_1817 )

Images from our photo collections that show those magnificent men (and women) in their flying, choo choo-ing, and driving machines... Oh, and we've cheated, we're adding boats and ships, jaunting cars and carriages, trams too and bicycles - we're completely shameless. So, basically any form of transport - air, sea, land - with the exception of two human feet...
