2/3 deploys to Okinawa UDP

description

Summary

Lance Cpl. Joseph Mecum, a rifleman with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, shares a bonding moment with his wife and daughter at Hangar 105 before leaving on deployment to Okinawa, June 9. 2/3 is the first infantry battalion to restart the unit deployment program cycle to Okinawa. “These Marines are going to Okinawa to fill the purpose of being a combat-ready infantry battalion in response to contingencies that might occur in the Pacific,” said Lt. Col. Justin S. Dunne, the commanding officer of 2/3. “Some of the missions they might be a part of include combat operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.” These Marines will also be training in various areas of the Pacific to include jungle warfare training in Okinawa and joint exercises with allied nations such as Japan, South Korea and Philippines. “As the strategic focus changes from Iraq and Afghanistan to the Pacific, our mission is to improve relations with other nations in the Pacific and improve their militaries,” Dunne said.
